Safety and security when at work are two of the most important things. And when workers are exposed to heights regularly, they are even more important. Yet despite there being regular hoops companies have to jump through in order ensure the safety of workers, there have unfortunately been reports of workers being injured as a result of measures not being taken.

With this in mind, Midland Pallet Trucks, one of the UK’s premier suppliers of pallet trucks, aerial work platforms and other equipment to a range of sectors, has highlighted what needs to be considered when working at height.

The first thing companies need to do is look at the bigger picture and decide whether the task in hand can be completed from the ground. If this is not the case however, then it’s time to look at the safety of both getting to height and the dangers of working at height.

Phil Chesworth, Managing Director at Midland Pallet Trucks, said, “All too often, we are quick to jump to the easiest way of working – but this isn’t always the safest. Should a task be able to be undertaken on ground level, then that should always be the first option. However we appreciate that isn’t always the case.”

Those working at height should always have the correct safety equipment on, in order to provide protection from falling objects or fragile surfaces. Employers should also make sure workers wear any other equipment necessary for other conditions. So should they be working outside for example, they will need a fluorescent jacket on over their work gear, in addition to a hardhat, correct footwear and even a harness should it be required.

The best piece of advice for those working at height from the expert however is to use the correct equipment – and make sure it is correctly safety checked.
“The importance of using not only reliable and strong, but also the correct equipment that is checked and maintained regularly really cannot be underestimated,” added Phil. “Equipment really is the backbone of any materials or manual handling business. The correct equipment will help to keep everyone safe and ensure that accidents are kept to a minimum.”

All in all companies must make sure all work is planned, supervised and carried out by people who are trained and fit to undertake the job in hand.
Midland Pallet Trucks is one of the UK’s largest suppliers of quality manual handling equipment and machinery in the UK, and has a plethora of experience helping customers choose the right equipment to ensure workers are kept as safe as possible.
