In fact, a survey conducted last year stated that small businesses accounted for a staggering 99.3% of all private sector businesses, with 99.9% of those being SMEs. The Department for Business Innovation and Skills conducted the survey last year as part of their research on the whole economic sector. Highlighting just how important SMEs are to the country’s economy, the survey found that their combined annual turnover was £1.8 trillion, which in turn, accounted for 47% of all private sector turnover in the UK.
The survey also stressed the importance of not generalising SMEs into one or two sectors. Noting that wholesale and retail trade and repair accounted for 15% of all SME employment, and almost a third of SME turnover was spread across construction (10%), manufacturing (10%) and professional, scientific and technical (10%), SMEs definitely don’t fit into a ‘one size fits all’ category.
